Hrvatski Telekom is the leading telecommunications provider in Croatia and a member of Deutsche Telekom group, providing fixed and mobile telephony, wholesale, internet and data services. In 2018, the company was on the lookout to replace their legacy AAA platform and introduce new services, with particular requirements for system stability, scalability and convergence (ability to support multiple access technologies through a single platform). Logate, together with S&T was chosen to implement OpenProvider AAA and answer to the specific client’s requirements.

Supporting multiple access technologies on a single AAA platform
In 2018. Hrvatski Telekom sought for a vendor to replace their old AAA (RADIUS) system for fixed users and to build a test AAA system, and to extend their NFVI infrastructure. Based on the extensive experience, Logate was chosen as a provider. After successful completion of the project, the cooperation continued on the project of extending the AAA platform to support mobile users and VoWiFi. Logate managed to introduce an efficient, scalable and stable virtual AAA system that was capable to support services offered by the client in a virtual environment and across several data centers.
The capabilities of OpenProvider AAA were especially distinguishable when the system was required to handle a growing number of users and user transactions that Hrvatski Telekom ex- perienced, especially in the domain of mobile services, for which Hrvatski Telekom is known to be a leader in the Croatian market.
The system was implemented on 3 data centers, all working in the active-active load sharing mode.
vAAA implementation for fixed services
Logate deployed its OpenProvider AAA platform that had the following characteristics:
- Handling AAA for fixed services - FTTH, Dial-up, WiFi, VPN
- Solution was delivered in the virtual environment using OpenStack NFV infrastructure
- High availability and scalability that allows fully redundant deployments with stateful processing across all nodes
- Real-time control and management over subscriber network access
- Easy service building supported by low code scripting language, OpenFunction
- Numerous options on how to handle charging and rating
- Personalized experience through different tiered-service bundles
- Web-based administration interface used for both service configuration and monitoring
- Integration with OSS/BSS systems
vAAA for mobile users and VoWiFi
After successful completion of vAAA for fixed services, in 2019, Logate team was entrusted by Hrvatski Telekom to:
- Extend the existing vAAA VNF including the third Data Center
- Implement vAAA for Mobile users
- Implement vAAA for VoWiFi
RESULTS
- Extending existing OpenProvider AAA to serve over 2 million mobile users
- Extended functionalities to support high performance and response time for AAA of mobile users
- Enhanced redundancy by adding a virtualized application to another DC.
Today, Hrvatski Telekom manages over 2 million mobile user accounts via OpenProvider AAA.
