OpenProvider AAA supported Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) in Magenta Telekom
Magenta Telekom (member of Deutsche Telekom group) is a leading provider of Internet, mobile communications, entertainment and business solutions in Austria. After a successful collaboration with Logate on implementing OpenProvider AAA to support fixed-mobile convergence (FMC), the collaboration continued to extend the capabilities of the platform to support the Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) service.

Expanding Magenta’s OpenProvider AAA to support Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi)
After successful completion of the FMC project in 2017. in collaboration with Logate, Magenta Telekom started a new initiative to introduce the new VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi) service to their customers. Successful implementation of the AAA solution for the FMC project automatically qualified Logate team to work on the new VoWiFi project. The new service was intended to be fully integrated with the existing user experience, provide higher voice quality and enhance the experience itself. In order to complete the project and introduce the VoWiFi service, it was needed to upgrade the existing infrastructure with new functionalities and interfaces to support the VoWiFi concept.
The Solution
Logate introduced VoWiFi functionality in Magenta Telekom onto the existing OpenProvider platform. The solution encompassed integration with EPC. Implementation included integration with the following elements using 3GPP-defined interfaces:
- Diameter SWx between 3GPP AAA and HSS
- Diameter SWm between ePDG and 3GPP AAA
- Diameter S6b between P-GW and 3GPP AAA
Within the project timeline, Logate team was able to conduct an upgrade of the existing OpenProvider AAA platform, testing and migration to production.
Collaboration benefits and results
The scalable OpenProvider AAA solution that was previously implemented by Logate for Magenta Telecom’s FMC project enabled an easy upgrade and expansion to new services. As a result, Magenta Telekom benefited from:
- Upgraded OpenProvider AAA platform to support new interfaces and functionalities needed to introduce the Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) service
- Continued and well established cooperation with a remote team of engineers
- Long term and stable cooperation on maintenance and improvements of the AAA platform
